Bharathiar University located in Coimbatore was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu in February 1982 under the Bharathiar University Act 1981 and Act I of 1982 and the university originated from the Post Graduate Centre of Madras University which was operating in Coimbatore before 1982 and in view of this, in 1985 the University Grants Commission UGC recognized Bharathiar University for grants.
